Biggest Loser Methods: Epic Fail | Rant #16

The Biggest Loser Is THE Biggest Loser:  Dirty Secrets Exposed

I have previously blogged about My Top 10 Secrets of the Biggest Loser.

And now former contestants like Kai Hibbard are stepping forward exposing what REALLY goes on behind the scenes in the making of a “reality” TV show surrounding weight loss contestants.  Hibbard lost 118lbs in 12 weeks on the show yet has regained 70 of the 118 lbs.  Props to her for coming clean on the TRUTH.

I hear comments from time to time…  “The Biggest Loser is soooo inspirational.”  or “The contestants on the Biggest Loser work so hard and look so great.”

Whatchoo Talkin' Bout Willis?

I knew there were shenanigans behind the curtain of the TV Camera.  Here are some juicy details and my response to them.

Shenanigans

BIggest Loser Shenanigan #1:  A Week Is Not a Week on TV

TV tells you that these people lost up to 12 pounds in 1 Week.  Hibbard says a week is not a week on TV.  Sometimes “a week” is 12 days for 15 days behind the scenes.  Remember they are slicing and dicing 7 days (or 12 or 15 days) of footage down into about 40 minutes of content.

BIggest Loser Shenanigan #2:  Weight Loss Techniques Shown can be Duplicated

Remember this is “Reality TV”.  Reality TV = The most drama possible to drive the highest ratings possible.  So reality is not really “reality”.  Biggest Loser Contestants are encouraged to use DEHYDRATION TECHNIQUES to max out their Weight Loss NUMBERS for that given time period.  But what I watch on TV and what is told to me on TV is REAL, correct?  aaaaaaahhhhhhh TV.  Ridiculously unhealthy and promoting unrealistic results.

BIggest Loser Shenanigan #3:  Encouraging 300lb+ Contestants to Run.

Running?  These people can’t even hardly WALK!  Here’s how much stress you put on your joints when you run

Bodyweight x 10-12.  Mine would be 205 x 10 = 2050 lbs PER STEP.  That’s fine if you’ve worked into adaptation.  Not so much if you have successfully planted your ass on the couch for 10 years and then say “I’m going to run a 5k in 3 weeks.”  Uh, no.

BIggest Loser Shenanigan #4:  Pressure of Losing Maximum Weight in 12 Weeks

I run 12 Week Body Transformation Contests at RAD Boot Camp.  I do promote maximum BODY TRANSFORMATION in 12 Weeks.  Our focus is Inches, Body Fat, and pounds.  The scale is not the “tell all”

It’s your journey.  You put on 22, 53, 87 or however many pounds over the course of years.  Unlikely you will strip all of it off in 12 weeks…the 22 is possible and has been done in my gym.

BIggest Loser Shenanigan #5:  Negative Body Image

Anyone who loses over 100lbs in 12 weeks is going to have some former habits take back over when they leave a super structured environment.  Personal chef.  Working out 4-6+ hours per day.  No job.  No spouse. No kids.  That’s as close to “reality” as I can think of.  When the TRUE reality of life sets in back home are the results going to stick?  And when they don’t, what are the thoughts running through the contestants’ heads?

It all comes down to Lifestyle Change.  To make permanent changes you must do things you have never done.

10 Beefs With the Biggest Loser | Rant #14

Warning: Controversial!

My Beef with the Biggest Loser

I have a beef.  And it has to do with a VERY popular TV show which claims to help obese people lose weight.  Buckle up…

Mr T. Pity the Fool vs. The Biggest Loser - Bob and Jillian

“I PITY the fool who believes these two…” –>

I watch ONE episode of the Biggest Loser per year.  Any more than that and I tend to throw up in my mouth which doesn’t exactly satisfy my taste buds.

Why do I have such disdain for the Biggest Loser?

10 Beefs With the Biggest Loser

10 Ridiculous Challenges…

You have avoided all forms of movement for years.
You are 43, 53, 78, 143, 235 lbs overweight.
Now let’s take you out and run 20 degree incline hill sprint repeats for an hour.
I have no idea how you just created a stress fracture in your foot in the first 10 min on an exercise program.

9 UNREAListic weight loss…

Is it unhealthy for someone to lose 25lbs in ONE week?  A better question…is it healthy to weigh over 400lbs.  Not so much.  It’s NOT about shedding the fat…it’s about KEEPING IT OFF!

8 Horrific exercise technique…

You’ve seen my rant on Jillian’s kettlebell technique.  It’s not just about kettlebells.  It’s about everything they do on that show.  There is bunk technique on almost every exercise they choose to show…boxing anyone?

7 Bunk Training Methods…

Pushing yourself to failure every workout is a surefire way to stay fat.  Fat is a function of hormone production in response to threat.  Going to failure produces threat.  Threat produces Cortisol.  Cortisol produces fat.  Jillian wrote a book on this and she still isn’t getting it right.

6 Doctors and Psychologists behind the scenes…

Supposedly there are doctors monitoring the Biggest Loser contestants’ training programs.  I’m sure they do exist because of liability.  I would like to meet them and ask them how much they are getting paid.  Psychologists.  They have to have them behind the scenes.  When someone is more than 100lbs overweight, it is outside the scope of food and exercise.  There is an underlying mental block that is manifesting bodyfat in order to “protect” that person from that same mental block.

5 Personal Chef…

They have chefs on this show that cook EXACT portions and EXACT food (healthy) that the contestants want.  Do YOU have a personal chef?

4 Planted sales pitches...

The show is becoming a pitch fest.  Is Wrigley’s Gum really going to control your appetite?  uh, no.

3 Bob and Jillian are LAME trainers…

I know the producers of the show are in control of portraying Bob and Jillian the way they want to.  But they could still control A LOT of variables when it comes to exercise selection and also exercise technique.
Nitro could do better :)   Check out Nitro’s favorite exercise…  click here

2 Focus Weight Loss vs. Body Composition change…

This is definitely BIGGEST rant peeve.  Ladies…  does it matter if you weight 180lbs if you fit in a size 4 jeans?  No.  STOP FOCUSING ON THE SCALE!!!!!!!!  The Biggest Loser has YOU focusing on the scale instead of the way your clothes fit.  You WANT to look better naked.  You must tone and maybe even build some muscle in order to look better naked.  Losing weight and leaving loose skin behind IS NOT looking better naked.  It’s looking more like a clothes rack.

1 UnREALity TV… UNREAListic Results…

12 weeks.  Lose 200lbs.  Possible?  yes.  We’ve seen it done.  Probable?  No.  Keep it off?  HELL NO.  I am going to guess that 90% of the previous Biggest Loser contestants have gained a lot of if not ALL of their weight back.  So what did 12 weeks of suffering teach them about lifestyle behavior modication?  ZERO.  and ZERO is a whole lot of NOTHING!  Bottom-line is this is Television Drama.  Let’s revisit…

Mr T. Pity the Fool vs. My Beef with the Biggest Loser

“I PITY the fool who believes this TV show…” –>

***Hey, if the Biggest Loser “inspires” you to get off your ass and change your life…word.  Just make sure you find someone to hold you accountable and to keep you going when results aren’t happening as fast as you would like them to .***

Biggest Loser’s Jillian Michaels Fails Miserably with Kettlebells | Rant #13

The Biggest Loser

+ Jillian Michaels Biggest Loser Kettlebells = Kettlebell ??

I witnessed a landmark event last night that was Ranting Fuel for today.  Jillian Michaels demonstrating KETTLEBELLS on The Biggest Loser….WRONG!  Imagine that.  Someone on TV who doesn’t know what the hell they’re doing.  Jillian, you should be ashamed of demonstrating something you obviously have yet to learn how to use yourself.  This is even more devastating because you stand atop a very influential platform that MILLIONS of people watching NOT-in-the-know now know about kettlebells (good) but will use them wrong (bad).

If you’re going to buy Kettlebells …you’ll want to BUY THEM FROM DRAGON DOOR!

Kettlebells

This is the equivalent of myself taking a 2 hour class on transmission repair at Jiffy Lube and then opening shop to fix transmissions.  Any takers?  I guarantee you this…make sure your insurance is paid up because you’ll be buying a new car!
