Here’s what Kerry has to say about classes at RAD Boot Camp…

I was frustrated with my physique and have been for many years.  After reading about kettlebell training, I attended my first kettlebell class 36 hours later.  I got my ass kicked (and enjoyed it) in my very first workout after thinking I was in some type of decent physical condition.

In the last 12 weeks I have lost 11% body fat, 6.5 inches 2 jean sizes and 28+ pounds all while increasing my strength and improving my cardio. Overall I have realized more goals in the last 18 months than I had ever attained In the past 20 years!

Brad:  Take me back a year or two …where you were physically, mentally, etc…  Everything previous to RAD Boot Camp / Kinetic Edge / Kettlebells?

Kerry: Prior to Kinetic Edge, I had been doing a fairly consistent routine of weight lifting and spinning classes at our local fitness club. 3 to 5 mornings a week of spinning classes for cardio(45 minutes) followed by a 4 day split of weight lifting . Day 1 chest, tri’s, legs….. Day 2 back , bi’s, shoulders. Days 3 and 4 repeated 1 and 2. Same thing day in day out. Very boring. Overall, consistent workouts, but when I left the gym it all went downhill. I figured that if I worked out that much I could eat pretty freely.   WRONG ANSWER!!!!!!!!! Bottom line…a lot of work for minimal overall results. Mentally, I was frustrated with my physique and have been for many years. Diets had worked in combination with exercise, but like all diets they eventually fail…….. Lifestyle and mindset changes work!!! That is where you Brad, came in to the picture and turned things upside down

St. Paul Kettlebell Classes - RAD Boot Camp

Brad:  What were your biggest frustrations about your body?

Kerry: The size of my gut!

St. Paul Kettlebell Classes - RAD Boot Camp

Brad:  How did you meet Brad / come into contact with RAD Boot Camp / Kinetic Edge / Kettlebell Training?

Kerry: My wife had brought home a copy of a GQ magazine in the attempt to ” try and dress me up a little bit”. During the course of my “courtesy reading” of this copy, I came across an article about kettlebell training. After reading the article, I knew this was something I wanted to get involved with. After going online and searching it out I came upon Kinetic Edge, picked up the phone called and talked to you a couple of times. After that, I came in for a couple of intro sessions and was hooked into this style of training.

St. Paul Kettlebell Classes - RAD Boot Camp

Brad:  Were you skeptical to try RAD Boot Camp / Kinetic Edge / Kettlebell training?…Why?

Kerry:To start with…no. After reading about kettlebell training , I was excited and ready to go. Then I attended my first class….. 36 hours later, I became skeptical because of the pain I felt. I realized that I had just got my ass kicked in my very first work -out after thinking I was in some type of physical condition. Another…..WRONG ANSWER!
Not only was I now pissed, I was hooked!
St. Paul Kettlebell Classes - RAD Boot Camp

Brad:  What was different about RAD Boot Camp from anything else you’ve tried?

Kerry: Being able to get a complete body workout in 45-50 minutes while never repeating the same routine twice.

St. Paul Kettlebell Classes - RAD Boot Camp

Brad:  Were there any myths busted for you at the boot camp?  (i.e. women getting bulky, men participating in an “step aerobics class”).

Kerry: The only myth busted was the one that I thought that I was somewhat in shape.

St. Paul Kettlebell Classes - RAD Boot Camp

Brad:  Discuss your thoughts on the Accelerated Fat Loss Eating Plan.  Did it change your thoughts about food?  Is it a plan you can continue to follow?

Kerry: The plan works if you follow it. More importantly, it is, and has become for me a lifestyle change. If you are going to change yourself, you are the one in control. There are no reasons that you can’t change, they would only be excuses. Regarding my thoughts on food, the old saying “eat to live, do not live to eat” has become a reality. The Eating Plan is one that, at its core, any person can follow as I intend to.

St. Paul Kettlebell Classes - RAD Boot Camp

Brad:  What specific changes have you seen in your body/ confidence / attitude?  (clothes size change, inches lost, body fat lost, pounds lost)?

Kerry: I have reduced inches off my body, increased my strength and improved my cardio capacity while realizing goals in 18 months that I have never attained over the past 20 years.

St. Paul Kettlebell Classes - RAD Boot Camp

Brad:  What’s your favorite body part now AFTER your transformation?  Why?

Kerry: Abs. It has always been the most visible weakness.

Kerry: I changed my eating habits while maintaining an aggressive workout schedule with you.

Here’s what Nicole has to say about classes at RAD Boot Camp…

He’s the BEST!

I have been working out with Kettlebells with Brad for almost 6 months now and I have really seen a difference in my energy level as well as my body size. I have lost about 5 pounds but have gone down two pants sizes (finally fitting back into the “goal pants!”). Here are some things that are great about Brad…Class is NEVER boring. I have never done the same workout twice.

I have seen Brad push us to failure during a “beatdown,” but I’ve also seen his gentler side when he was working with my 60-year old mother who has not exercised regularly in a few years. Brad has a great ability to work with all fitness levels and understand and reinforce each individual’s true motivation. I am a previous Division I athlete who said I’d never ever do strength training again. I thought I’d stick with only running for exercise. And now I wake up to drive clear across town for a 5:30am kettlebell workout. Need I say more?

Brad:  Take me back a few years…where you were physically, mentally, etc…  Everything previous to RAD Boot Camp / Kinetic Edge / Kettlebells?

Nicole: I was finished competing in Division I athletics and looking for something to fill the workout void, post college.  I had tried some other strength training, but nothing that I’d stick with for more than a few months. I had been doing a lot of running and starting to get into triathlons. I was in okay shape, but knew things could be better.

St. Paul Kettlebell Boot Camp

Brad:  What were your biggest frustrations about your body?

Nicole: Always my stomach. No matter what I did or how much I worked out, I always felt like I had a pouchy stomach.

St. Paul Kettlebell Boot Camp

Brad:  What else have you tried?

Nicole: I had been to other boot camps, tried other gyms (both big and small) and did a lot of running.

St. Paul Kettlebell Boot Camp

Brad:  How did you meet Brad / come into contact with RAD Boot Camp / Kinetic Edge / Kettlebell Training?

Nicole: Brad was a guest instructor one day at a boot camp I was doing through another gym. About 5 minutes into the workout I turned to my friend and said “we HAVE to do this.” I found Brad online and at the time he was just getting Kinetic Edge started.

St. Paul Kettlebell Boot Camp

Brad:  Were you skeptical to try RAD Boot Camp / Kinetic Edge / Kettlebell training?…
Why?

Nicole: If I was skeptical at all, it was only that I’d get bored after a few months and stop doing it, much like other strength training options I had tried in the past. I was also worried that I’d tire of the drive, as I was coming from Uptown to Woodbury for the workouts.  2+ years later, I’m still making the drive!

St. Paul Fitness Boot Camp - Kettlebell Training

Brad:  Describe your first experience with RAD Boot Camp / Kinetic Edge / Kettlebell training…

Nicole: I felt very uncoordinated during the workout and very sore afterwards. But I was intrigued enough that I knew I’d go back.

St. Paul Kettlebell Boot Camp

Brad:  What was different about RAD Boot Camp from anything else you’ve tried?

Nicole: I’ve been working out with Brad for 2+ years and I’ve never gotten bored and never done the same workout twice. The variety in workouts and the great group of people that I’m surrounded by every day at Kinetic Edge are the reasons I keep coming back (along with, of course, the results). I have never seen results so quickly, both in physical appearance as well as performance in other sports.

St. Paul Kettlebell Boot Camp

Brad:  Were there any myths busted for you at the boot camp?  (i.e. women getting bulky, men participating in an “step aerobics class”).

Nicole: I think there’s always a myth about women “getting big” from strength training. Spend any time with the women who work out at Kinetic Edge and that myth will quickly be busted.

St. Paul Kettlebell Boot Camp

Brad:  What specific changes have you seen in your body/ confidence / attitude?  (clothes size change, inches lost, bodyfat lost, pounds lost)?

Nicole: In terms of weight loss, I lost about 15 pounds from when I first started (Brad – I can’t find my measurements, but if you have them, feel free to share). I had been about 130 pounds before in my life, but at the time, I was a size 8.  With KB and 130 pounds, I’m a size 4-6!
I also saw major improvements in my triathlon times.  I improved in each area – swimming, biking, and running – from training with Kettlebells. And what was the biggest surprise for me was to see how much more quickly my body could recover. I can now bike/run a hill and I’m ready to keep on going, instead of hitting the top and needing a moment to recover before pushing on.

St. Paul Kettlebell Boot Camp

Brad:  What’s your favorite body part now AFTER your transformation?  Why?

Nicole: I’d have to say my arms/shoulders.  I got lots of compliments on them at my wedding! But overall I’ve never been so comfortable with my entire body.

St. Paul Kettlebell Boot Camp

Brad:  What is your #1 “secret” as to why you finally got the results you were looking for?

Nicole: I don’t think there’s a secret…follow Brad’s system and you’ll see results!

St. Paul Kettlebell Boot Camp

Brad:  What would you tell someone like yourself who is on the fence about starting RAD Boot Camp / Kinetic Edge classes?

Nicole: Don’t wait to get started. You’ll know quickly if it’s going to be a good fit for you, so just jump right in.

What’s YOUR Excuse? | Rant #13

Excuses.  Excuses for NOT doing something–in this case, exercise–are actually REASONS FOR DOING SOMETHING.  Self-talk is powerful.  Carry around a notebook for 48 hours and write down EVERYTHING you say to yourself.  Let me know the heavier scale…positive vs. negative self-talk.  Here is SHORT List of excuses I hear on a weekly basis…

What’s YOUR Excuse?

I don’t have time.

I’m too busy.

I travel a lot for my job.

I have 2, 3, 4 kids.

My doctor says I’m “OK.” (aka: “I’m LAZY.”)

I just had a baby.

I’ve tried 7 other exercise programs and they’ve all failed.

The gym intimidates me.

Exercise is boring.

I’m too old.

I’m too young.

I’m too fat.

I’m too thin.

I don’t know where to begin

I have a thyroid condition.

I’m on too many medications.

I’m depressed.

I’ve tried 17 diets they’ve all failed.

Exercise is painful.

It’s too expensive.

I’m too out-of-shape.

I’m not ready for commitment.

I don’t have any equipment.

I’m too tired.

I have to get in shape BEFORE I start kettlebelling or personal training (huh?)
[if what you've been doing were working, we wouldn't be having this conversation.]

And my ALL-TIME FAVORITE…I have a hang nail.

Seriously?  Really?  I know you have a problem.  That’s why your circling the blue skies “thinking” about looking better naked instead of “DOING” something about it.

When I was 16, I developed a MAJOR low back problem at the time.  I am sure this was developing over time and then one day “BAM!” I bent over to tie my shoe and could not get out of the fetal position.  After some X-Rays here is what I discovered…

A spondylolisthesis.  I actually have 6 lumbar vertebrae instead of 5 (maybe that’s why I’m so screwed up ;)   and the 6th one has a hairline fracture which is basically permanent.  Here’s what MY back looks like…

Brad Nelson - spondylolisthesis - kettlebell, deadlift, hard core strength training

Yes this is an x-ray of MY LOW BACK.  Notice how the last lumbar is shifted forward 30+ % off my tailbone.  Remember, this was discovered when I was 16 years old playing hoops and running track & cross country.  Now I am 32 years old and feel better now than I did then.  In spite of this “condition”, which by the way is as common as 1 in 8000 people, I still am LOVING feats of strength and training my ass off because I love strength and conditioning.  And I am doing all of it PAIN FREE!
Here’s what I’ve accomplished since discovering my low back being not “normal” (what IS “normal?)

  • All Conference Basketball
  • Average 3 pt field goal % at 42% in HS senior season
  • All-time leader most 3 pters attempted in a season
  • All-time leader most 3 pters made in a season
  • All Conference Track & Field
  • 1600 m (1 mile) PR 4:47 / 3200m (2 mile) PR 9:41
  • All Conference Cross Country (HS only had Cross Country my Senior Year)
  • 5000m (5k / 3.1 miles) PR 17:57 (1995)
  • Deadlift 495 lbs at 196 bodyweight

Brad Nelson - 495 Deadlift - April 2008 Tactical Strength Challenge

  • Snatch 32kg (70lbs) kettlebell for 95 reps in 5 minutes @ 196 lbs bodyweight
  • Double Snatch pair of 40kgs kettlebells (176 lbs) x 3 reps
  • Double Pistol (1 Leg Squat) pair of 28kgs (124 lbs ) kettlebells for 1 rep each leg

…you get the idea.
This is NOT meant to brag on me.  It is to show you that despite circumstances out of my control, I chose to continue down a path I loved.  And because of it “what doesn’t kill you, MAKES YOU STRONGER.”

Here’s what I did about my back “condition”…

Mobility.  I specifically recommend Z Health Performance.

Kettlebells.  I specifically recommend Dragon Door Kettlebells.

  • Turkish Get Ups
  • Windmills
  • RKC Arm Bars
  • Military Presses

Save up to 30% on Dragon Door's classic Kettlebells

Mobility + Kettlebells completely fixed my low back condition.  I feel and perform better now at age 32 than at age 16.

Now what’s YOUR excuse…I mean YOUR REASON ??

Crank it!

Here’s what Kathi has to say about classes at RAD Boot Camp…

Cellulite Fighter…

When my son went off to college I thought that my life was coming to an end. After a year of feeling sorry for myself I decided to go back to school to complete my degree. I threw myself into work and college in order to keep my mind off of my loneliness; I went from an active, healthy, happy lifestyle to a sedentary, unhealthy lifestyle. I did not realize the consequences of my new lifestyle until I saw a picture of myself 80 pounds heavier and aged 20 years.

Using the treadmill and free weights at work I managed to lose a measly 5 pounds in a year and half.

A friend of a friend told me about Rad Boot Camp.  I went to see what this was all about. I lasted 15 minutes of a 30 minute sample routine.  I was so out of breath and sweating so much I could not believe this feeling.

I started with Rad Boot Camp in May of 2007…from June to July I lost 7.5 inches all off of my thighs, hips, waist, and bust and I’ve lost 3 pants sizes…a size 14 to an 8.  …THE CELLULITE IS GONE.

Now at the seven month mark I’ve lost 20 inches and 30 pounds!  Brad is the best because he is constantly challenging me and he holds me accountable to our meal plans.  I could not find a better instructor than Brad or a more complete fitness routine than Rad Boot Camp!

Kathi in the HOT SEAT

St. Paul Personal TrainerBrad:  Take me back a few years…where you were physically, mentally, etc… Everything previous to RAD Boot Camp / Kinetic Edge / Kettlebells?

Kathi: This is a not an easy question and it will lengthy. Being a single parent my life revolved around my son from the day he was born. He graduated from high school in 2001 and left for college. I did not realize how lonely and how empty my life was without him. I filled this void with alcohol. In 2004 I decided that I needed to pick myself up and go on with life. My son was going to graduate from college in 2005 and all I have done since he left was feel sorry for myself. In the fall of 2004 I enrolled in college. I worked full-time and pursued my Criminal Justice degree at night and on weekends. Being out of school for over 20 years I knew that I had to make a total commitment to myself if I was going to get my degree. If I was not working I was studying and the only physical activity that I allowed myself was during my lunch hour. I would workout in the weight room at my work – between the bicycle, the treadmill and weight training I made sure that I was moving for 30-45 minutes a day. In May 2005 my son graduated from college and had gone from size 4 to size 14 at this time. In the fall of 2006 I was still in a size 16 even though I was moving my body for 30 to 45 minutes a day – I did not realize how big I was getting until my son sent me a picture of myself from November of 2006 – I received the picture in March 2007.

In the March of 2006 I got a new supervisor at work. Due to my supervisors’ inability to understand state law and DOC policy – the stress at work doubled for me along with the responsibility of my supervisor’s job duties. Now my job became a stressor in my life, not the duties but having to deal with an incompetent supervisor and the only answer afforded me was that I would have to take on the added responsibility of the supervisors duties until she could handle the duties – she never was able to handle the duties and left the unit after 18 months. Between the stress of my job, the stress of school, the emptiness depression, and the self-pity I was fast on my own downward spiral.

With my graduation in sight I decided it was time to take my weight gain serious. My co-worker and workout partner got an invitation to an AdvoCare/kettlebell Introduction and we decided that we had nothing to lose so we went to the introduction and the rest is history.

St. Paul Personal TrainerBrad:  What were your biggest frustrations about your body?

Kathi: The biggest frustration/surprise with my body was age. There were many factors that played a part in my weight gain, however my body reacted to the weight gain. There is actually an age – it is different for everybody but I would guess it starts around 35 years old that your body responds to diets and exercise differently. For two years I fell for the 30 minutes of exercise a day routine and hit the treadmill five days a week. Then I went to 45 minutes a day and still could not drop more than five pounds. It was like my body would not let go of the weight.

St. Paul Personal TrainerBrad:  What else have you tried?

Kathi:
Starvation
Step Aerobics
Plastic sweat suit
weight training
liquid diets
detoxification diets
Over the counter pills
Prescription diet pills
Grapefruit diet
Running
Walking
Run/walk
Jumping Jacks
Jumping rope (totally not successful)
I tried everything but the cabbage soup diet.

Woodbury Personal TrainerBrad:  How did you meet Brad / come into contact with RAD Boot Camp / Kinetic Edge / Kettlebell Training?

Kathi: A co-worker/workout partner was given a flyer for an Advocare Introduction/Kettlebell demonstration. I was interested in the kettlebell workout and my co-worker was interested in the Advocare. We attended this event for totally different reasons, Deb was looking for the miracle pill that melts fat off your body – I knew this did not exist unless you mixed it with a killer workout. We sat through the Advocare seminar and finally the 10 minute kettlebell introduction. After about 5 minutes, my heart was pounding so hard in my chest and I had sweat dripping down my face and chest – I knew this was a killer workout. The same friend that gave us the seminar information recommended Brad at Kinetic Edge. He told us that if we were looking for a kettlebell instructor there were none better than Brad.

Woodbury Personal Trainer Brad:  Were you skeptical to try RAD Boot Camp / Kinetic Edge / Kettlebell training?…Why?

Kathi: One of my least favorite things is to attend workout “classes” and I knew that if I did not act right away that I never would make the call. Of course I contacted Brad via e-mail – this is the cowardly and one of the least committed forms of communication. I had a response within 24 hours – of course to call him to discuss my request. I wanted to expose my entire family to kettlebells including my Mom. I wanted to bring my entire family or everyone that I could to a beginner kettlebell class and the only day of the week I could get my family members to commit to was a Wednesday. Brad agreed to do a later Wednesday class for us and the rest is history. After the 90 minute introductory/beginner class I was hooked, but so was my Mom, two of my co-workers and my sister-in-law.

Woodbury Personal TrainerBrad:  Describe your first experience with RAD Boot Camp / Kinetic Edge / Kettlebell training…

Kathi: My first experience with Brad and kettlebell training was the beginner class that Brad put on for my family and a few friends. I think that we had eleven or twelve adults and five of my nieces and nephews under the age of six. I can never explain the mix of personalities in the room and to say that Brad was patient is an understatement. I think there was a point with my sister-in-law that Brad told her – in a very nice but stern way to “suck it up” that I really knew this was the right person and the right place.

Woodbury Kettlebell Boot Camp Fitness ClassesBrad:  What was different about RAD Boot Camp from anything else you’ve tried?

Kathi: This works! It is not just the kettlebells but the instruction and the workouts that Brad puts together are great. It does not matter your age or your physical capabilities – it works. This is a cardio, flexibility and strength program in a 45 minute class and there is nothing that will ever come close to this workout and the results that you experience.

Woodbury Kettlebell Boot Camp Fitness ClassesBrad:  Were there any myths busted for you at the boot camp? (i.e. women getting bulky, men participating in an “step aerobics class”).

Kathi: I hate cardio and hate cardio classes – kettlebells gives me a kick butt cardio workout and I am not jumping around like an idiot in class full of “Barbies”
Kettlebells do not add bulk to your shape they actually lean your look and they are easy to work with because of the handle.

Woodbury Kettlebell Boot Camp Fitness ClassesBrad:  What specific changes have you seen in your body/ confidence / attitude? (clothes size change, inches lost, bodyfat lost, pounds lost)?

Kathi: I do not have my “pie hole diary” in front of me at this time but when I started at Kinetic Edge I was in a size 14 to 16 and weighed in roughly at 210. I am now in a size 6 to 8 and weigh 150.

Woodbury Kettlebell Boot Camp Fitness ClassesBrad:  What’s your favorite body part now AFTER your transformation? Why?

Kathi: My favorite part of the AFTER is that I am in much better shape. I lost a lot of weight but the flexibility and strength that I have gained is so great. I have more energy – I am happier – I feel better – I feel alive again.

Kathi Burger - AFTER St. Paul RAD Boot Camp Transformation

Woodbury Kettlebell Boot Camp Fitness ClassesBrad:  What is your #1 “secret” as to why you finally got the results you were looking for?

Kathi: I was losing inches but my weight was not coming off as fast. I discussed this with Brad and he convinced me to start keeping a food journal (often referred to as a “pie hole diary”). I took Brad’s advice and after a month of recording everything that went into my mouth – including chewing gum and mints, Brad looked it over and told me where my problem areas were. I would have never believed this if I had not lived it (old habits are hard to break) but I was not getting enough food and nutrition in my diet for the amount of physical activity. Brad had me add a meal and some healthy snacks to my diet and I am now 60 pounds lighter.

Woodbury Kettlebell Boot Camp Fitness ClassesBrad:  What would you tell someone like yourself who is on the fence about starting RAD Boot Camp / Kinetic Edge classes?

Kathi: This works, you will be able to feel every muscle in your body but the pain will go away. What are you waiting for? The only thing you have to lose is fat. The longer you put it off the harder it will be to make the change. There is no time like the present. Usually I do not have to tell people anything – they ask me how I did it and I tell them. This is not a workout for puffs – you have to understand that you need to put in the work to see the results. Standing at the stations and watching the other people does not work.

Woodbury Kettlebell Boot Camp Fitness ClassesBrad:  Sum up RAD Boot Camp / Kinetic Edge classes in 5 WORDS OR LESS…

Kathi: This is the hardest question of them all ……….. you are asking a woman to describe the greatest thing in the world – second only to her child in five words or less.

Rad Boot Camp (don’t count those words) It works – try it!

I did it in four – really I am just saving the fifth word – always have to have the last word. ;)

Kathi, yes you do ALWAYS have to have the last word.  You’ve worked your ass off literally and figuratively.  We are proud of YOU!

Woodbury Fitness Boot Camp Weight Loss Before & After – Jill Olson

Today’s Woodbury RAD Boot Camp spotlight is on Jill Olson.  Jill was referred to me by Dr. Tory Robson at Woodbury Spine & Injury because he knew that a little dose of kettlebell training would help Jill’s ailing back pain.

Jill had worked with a personal trainer before me, but nothing like the workouts I was going to dish out.  When we began working together she had difficulty moving in a lot of positions from her back pain and wouldn’t dare leave the ground to run at all let alone jump on a 6-inch box.

Fast forward 2 years.  Jill…

  • is FREE of back pain
  • jumps on a 30 inch box
  • does 4 strict pullups (on her way to 10)
  • just finished her FIRST half-marathon a couple of weeks ago
  • is training to a Russian Kettlebell Certification Candidate

Jill has made AWESOME leaps in her ability and fitness!  Props to Jill!

If you hate the treadmill, you NEED this…

I am a mother of two young boys and I started working with Brad and RAD Boot Camp almost one year ago…

A couple months ago I purchased an evening gown for a charity event in November.
The day before the event I tried it on… good news and bad news…Bad news was the dress did not fit right.  Good news was that it was TOO BIG! What an awesome surprise! I love being able to wear whatever I have in my closet. RAD Boot Camp is so much fun. The variety and results keep me coming back for more.

Jill: I was sick and tired.  I was sick of trying to cram myself into my cloths on a daily basis and the way that I looked in them.  I always felt tired and had little energy.  I couldn’t get rid of the “fat patch”.  That is the clump of fat at the end of my rump and where my leg begins.  I didn’t have tone or definition on any part of my body.  I felt just blah.
Kettlebell Fitness Boot Camp Woodbury | St. Paul

Brad:  What else have you tried?

Jill: I had A membership at LifeTime Fitness.  I would go into the gym and do the same old routines on Different elliptical machines, spin classes, or other equipment.  I even hired a trainer at one time.  I was not pushed to work harder.  I saw little or no results.  Basically it got me in the door at the gym just to have someone following me around with a clipboard.  It was just as boring and more expensive than going on my own.  I’ve also purchased several different videos including kicking boxing to do at home.

Brad:  How did you meet Brad / come into contact with RAD Boot Camp / Kinetic Edge / Kettlebell Training?

Jill: I met Brad through my chiropractor who encouraged me to try kettlebells.  I started with personal training because I had a back injury that had previously prevented me from having full range of motion and motivation.
Kettlebell Fitness Boot Camp Woodbury | St. Paul

Brad:  Were you skeptical to try RAD Boot Camp / Kinetic Edge / Kettlebell training?…

Jill: Why?  I wouldn’t say skeptical as much as concerned that lifting and swinging a hunk of metal would worsen my issues rather that help them.

Brad:  Describe your first experience with RAD Boot Camp / Kinetic Edge / Kettlebell training…

Jill: I personal trained with Brad privately for about a year before I started with the camps.  Camp was extremely challenging yet motivating at the same time.  I keep coming back for more!  The classes/routines are always different and interesting.  I like the “friendly” competitions.

Brad:  What was different about RAD Boot Camp from anything else you’ve tried?

Jill: There are many ways to work a muscle group so it doesn’t get boring.

Brad:  Were there any myths busted for you at the boot camp?  (i.e. women getting bulky, men participating in an “step aerobics class”).

Jill: Hmmm.  None.  I was never concerned with getting too big from lifting weights probably because I’d never seen results before so I didn’t think that it would ever happen to me.  So I guess the myth busted for me is that I’m actually stronger than I think I am.  I still get stuck sometimes thinking that I can only lifting a certain size bell but there is always someone there to push me.

Kettlebell Fitness Boot Camp Woodbury | St. Paul

Brad:  What specific changes have you seen in your body/ confidence / attitude?  (clothes size change, inches lost, bodyfat lost, pounds lost)?

Jill: I have definition in my arms and shoulders.  I can wear all of the small jeans in my closet.  The previous bigger sizes are now too big.  I actually sometimes go to my closet dreading having to pick out a pair of jeans to wear because I forget that they all actually fit me now.  That feels really cool.

Brad:  What’s your favorite body part now AFTER your transformation?  Why?

Jill: Why?  Thunder and Lighting.  (my arms) Why?  Have you met them?  Just kidding.  My arms and shoulders show how hard I have been working.  The “fat patch” is disappearing as well!

Brad:  What is your #1 “secret” as to why you finally got the results you were looking for?

Jill: Shhhhh   Maybe it’s the magic “butt be gone” pill.  Catalyst is an Advocare product that supports muscle tone and enhances strength and increases energy.  I would highly recommend checking it out.  Maybe it’s that I found something fun, different, interesting and challenging so I want to and can’t wait to work out again.

Brad:  What would you tell someone like yourself who is on the fence about starting RAD Boot Camp / Kinetic Edge classes?

Jill: Do it!  It is sooo much fun!!  You have nothing to lose by coming and trying it out for one week.  Well except maybe a few pounds.  You will be so glad you did!

Twin Cities fitness centers get creative

No one said workouts must be boring

Brad Nelson must hate tires.

He raises a 10-pound sledgehammer high over his head, then
bashes it into a 2-foot-thick tractor tire. He whacks it over and over,
as grim as if he were bashing Osama Bin Laden himself.

“You get more workout in less time,” said Nelson, between whacks. “And it’s something fresh and fun.”

Nelson’s business, Kinetic Edge in Woodbury, is one of a growing
number of boutique fitness centers with imaginative — or even bizarre —
approaches to fitness.

New, creative ways to sweat are popping up faster than
resolutions on New Year’s Day — including workouts based on kickboxing,
rap music, ballet and indoor triathlons.

“We are always looking for new ways to spice up the exercise
routine,” said Kara Thompson, spokeswoman for the International Health,
Racquet & Sportsclub Association.

One hot trend, she said, is Budokon — a blend of yoga and martial arts. BalleCore, another offshoot, blends ballet and yoga.

Zumba — aerobic dancing to Latin music — is mainstream enough
that there was, for example, a Zumba fundraiser in Anoka last month to
combat violence against women.

Fitness experts can’t keep up with evaluating the routines that
are popping up rapidly. But they agree on one thing: The only effective
workout is one that people actually do. They applaud anything — even
sledgehammer workouts — that keep customers from getting bored with
exercise.

The variety of workouts is one reason the number of for-profit fitness clubs in the U.S. has doubled to about 30,000 in the past eight years.

Although the number of people exercising in those clubs dropped
about 2 percent last year, they are paying more — profits were up 3
percent. That is because they are paying more for extra services and
new, creative classes, Thompson said.

On healthclubdirectory.com, there are now 136 fitness centers listed for the Twin Cities.

“The smaller places are going up everywhere,” said Julie Gronquist, owner of Balance for Life Fitness Center in Shoreview.

The strangest workout at her center involves a machine that
looks like a torture rack. It is called, appropriately, “The Reformer.”

The machine usually is used in conjunction with Pilates
workouts, but it has developed a following of its own, Gronquist said.
Customers strap themselves onto the rack in a kneeling, sitting or
prone position and move back and forth on spring-loaded tracks.

“It’s very circus-y,” Gronquist said.

At the Athlete Lab in Little Canada, Kate Klaers offers workouts that are more masochistic.

Klaers, a former St. Paul firefighter, said her “Boot Camp”
workouts are similar to those required for Navy SEALS and firefighters.

“We have no machines. It’s very old-school,” with pull-up bars
and medicine balls, Klaers said. “It is not for the faint of heart.”

Tire whacking is one of many exercises offered at Kinetic Edge. But it isn’t the strangest.

That would be the sloshing beer keg lift.

Patrons put a certain amount of water into the kegs, then lift them around, turning side to side.

“This is called ‘functional training,’ ” said Nelson, who has 80 clients.

Functional training mimics daily tasks such as lifting.

“I think about her,” said Nelson, nodding toward a customer.
“She is carrying a laundry basket all day. How can I make her daily
life more easy?”

Nelson offers sessions twice a week in which customers move
among exercise stations. These include the tire whacking, beer keg
lifting and sit-ups — with your legs attached to straps hanging from
the ceiling.

The Russian kettlebells also require explaining.

“When I talk about them,” said Ellen Anderson, 18, of Mahtomedi,
“everyone looks at me and asks if I am talking about tea kettles.”

Not exactly. In the Kinetic Edge studio recently, Anderson
grunted as she lifted weights that looked like cannonballs with
handles.

Most workouts include swinging the kettlebells from the floor, between a person’s legs, to over their heads.

“It is a hip-driven tool. It is not just for one muscle, like
the biceps or triceps. Every exercise uses about 70 percent of your
muscles,” Nelson said.

The studio is like a teenage testosterone haven, with hanging
chains, sledgehammers sitting in a row, “Cast Iron Balls” T-shirts and
the machine shop screeches of a Metallica CD.

Yet most of the kettlebell customers are women.

Lucy Burger, 67, of Afton, has lost 52 pounds since she started
six years ago. She was recovering from injuries to both knees after a
car accident.

“I could barely walk up steps when I started,” she said.

Troy Moser, 37, of Woodbury, who is also a member of Gold’s Gym,
said, “I am anti-class.” But after hearing his wife rave about the
kettlebells for more than a year, he decided to try it. Now, he goes
about four times a week and says he has “leaned up” quickly.

The appeal of niche fitness centers is based on personal attention.

During a recent kettlebell session, Nelson walked among the
eight customers, looking for proper form, adjusting a leg here, moving
a head there.

Nelson hollered: “Shoulders over hips!”

“What hips?” groaned Muhaz Fisseha, of Woodbury, who said she is “over 40.”

Penny Osland lay twisted on the mat, lifting a wobbling
kettlebell skyward. She was asked if any of her friends thought her
workouts were odd.

Maybe, said Osland, 50, of Cottage Grove. But she is delighted with the results.

Osland has done other forms of exercise.

“But this is what pushed me over where I really notice body improvements,” she said.

Bob Shaw can be reached at 651-228-5433.

Woodbury Fitness Boot Camp Weight Loss Before & After – Amy Jurrens

Today’s Woodbury RAD Boot Camp Fat Loss Transformation spotlight is on Amy Jurrens.  Amy lives 4 hours away in Iowa but does online training with me and has done so now for two years.  She’s has gotten killer results and in her own words has become a “hot mom.”  Props to Amy for chiseling away the fat and becoming a Russian Kettlebell Instructor (RKC) in the process.

Here’s what Amy has to say about classes at RAD Boot Camp…

Discover your potential…

“I started working with Brad and RAD Boot Camp in January 2007, …he allows me to make choices and then be held accountable for the outcome – good or bad. Case in point: nutrition. I did not want to change my eating habits. Brad let me pay the consequences of that decision. When I was ready to change, he told me straight out what I NEEDED to hear, but didn’t necessarily WANT to hear. In other words, he gave me a good, swift, verbal kick in the hind end. No sugar coating – just the truth.

Yes, I’ve lost weight and body fat through my training with Brad. Yes, I am in the best shape I have probably ever been in. (I’m a 36 year old mother of two and a lifelong athlete.) Yes, I love the RAD Boot Camp workouts Brad puts together.

BUT…… The reason I recommend Brad so highly is because he is a true teacher. A true teacher is someone who helps you discover skills and knowledge you possess but just don’t know how to tap into. A true teacher prepares you for the time when the teacher is not around to guide you. A true teacher sees the potential in you and leads you to see it too. A true teacher doesn’t give you the answers; he asks the questions and makes you find the answers. Brad is true teacher.

If you’re ready to find the person you really are, contact Brad TODAY!!!!”

Amy in the HOT SEAT

Woodbury Personal Trainer - Kettlebell ClassesBrad:  Take me back a few years…where you were physically, mentally, etc…  Everything previous to RAD Boot Camp / Kinetic Edge / Kettlebells?

Amy: I am a mother of two – my first was born in 1998 and my second in 2001.  I had gained 20 pounds with each pregnancy, but had lost most of the weight through nursing.  In March 2003, my husband and I took a 10th wedding anniversary trip to Las Vegas.  I saw the photos of myself after the trip and was stunned.  I had seen myself in the mirror, but I hadn’t really SEEN myself.  I had gained back all the weight I had lost.  I looked tired and well beyond my 32 years.  I looked like a frumpy mommy and I dressed like one.  I was in denial about how I really looked.  I wore skirts and dresses a lot so that I wouldn’t have to buy larger clothes.  I didn’t want to admit that my size 14 clothes were getting too small.

Woodbury Personal Trainer - Kettlebell ClassesBrad:  What were your biggest frustrations about your body?

Amy: I was most frustrated with my saddlebags, my wings, and my sausage arms.

Woodbury Personal Trainer - Kettlebell ClassesBrad:  What else have you tried?

Amy: In the summer of 2003 I started walking and running.  In the fall of 2003 I added weight training.  I had been an avid weight lifter in college, so it was fun for me to get back into that.  I lifted weights and ran on the treadmill or elliptical machine for two years.  I didn’t lose any weight.  In early 2006 I was introduced to kettlebells by a friend.  I started some sporadic kettlebell training along with my weight lifting and running.  I lost 10 pounds.  I was excited that something finally worked.

Woodbury Personal Trainer - Kettlebell ClassesBrad:  How did you meet Brad / come into contact with RAD Boot Camp / Kinetic Edge / Kettlebell Training?

Amy: I met Brad through the Dragon Door online forum

in late 2006.  He responded to a question I posted, and that started our correspondence, which led to me hiring Brad as my personal boot camp trainer in January 2007.

St. Paul Personal Trainer - Kettlebell ClassesBrad:  Were you skeptical to try RAD Boot Camp / Kinetic Edge / Kettlebell training?…
Why?

Amy: I was ready for the focus and challenges I would face.  I was ready to change my life for the better.  I had no idea just how much my life would actually change.

St. Paul Personal Trainer - Kettlebell ClassesBrad:  Describe your first experience with RAD Boot Camp / Kinetic Edge / Kettlebell training…

Amy: Brad took the time to get to know me.  He watched how my body moved, he assessed my fitness level, and he took my mental temperature.  He asked for my feedback on the training so he could make adjustments.

St. Paul Personal Trainer - Kettlebell ClassesBrad:  What was different about RAD Boot Camp from anything else you’ve tried?

Amy: Brad learned about what makes me tick, how much I am willing to push myself, and how much pushing I need from him.  Because he did this, he has been able to give me the personalized training I need.

St. Paul Personal Trainer - Kettlebell ClassesBrad:  Were there any myths busted for you at the boot camp?  (i.e. women getting bulky, men participating in an “step aerobics class”).

Amy: As I get stronger, I get leaner.  In the past few months, I haven’t dropped many pounds, but I’ve dropped several inches.  I am tall – 5’11” – and I lift heavy kettlebells (20 and 24 kg), but I do not have big, bulky muscles.  I recently completed the SSST – 200 kettlebell snatches with the 16 kg (35 lb) kettlebell in 10 minutes.  That requires a lot of strength and endurance.  RAD boot camp training has allowed me to develop my strength and endurance to levels I have never attained before, even as a high school and college athlete.

St. Paul Personal Trainer - Kettlebell ClassesBrad:  What specific changes have you seen in your body/ confidence / attitude?  (clothes size change, inches lost, bodyfat lost, pounds lost)?

Amy: I’ve dropped over 11% bodyfat and 23+ pounds.  I went from a size 14 to a size 8.  I am not finished yet!  I’m still a work in progress, but the progress so far has been amazing.

Amy Jurrens - Before Woodbury Personal TrainingAmy Jurrens - AFTER Woodbury RAD Boot Camp Fat Loss Transformation

St. Paul Personal Trainer - Kettlebell ClassesBrad:  What’s your favorite body part now AFTER your transformation?  Why?

Amy: I love my abs because I can see each muscle.

St. Paul Personal Trainer - Kettlebell ClassesBrad:  What is your #1 “secret” as to why you finally got the results you were looking for?

Amy: I made the commitment to myself.  I was tired of failing, so I chose to do something different.  What I had been doing obviously wasn’t working.  The physical changes I’ve gone through are merely the outward sign of changes in my thinking and lifestyle.  My life looks nothing like it did a few years ago.  I train differently; I think about myself differently; and I definitely eat differently.  All three had to click before I saw results.

St. Paul Personal Trainer - Kettlebell ClassesBrad:  What would you tell someone like yourself who is on the fence about starting RAD Boot Camp / Kinetic Edge classes?

Amy: Every day I am reminded of how grateful I am for Brad’s coaching.  He taught me about myself and helped me find the strength inside myself to reach my goals.

Tactical Strength Challenge – April 4 2009

7 brave souls showed at Kinetic Edge Fitness on Saturday April 4th 2009 to test their mettle in 3 events…

Lessons learned…

1 Andy Anderson is a 52 year old stud.  No training.  Came out and impressed the hell out of me.  Managed to Deadlift 275 / notched a 0 on Pullups / Snatch 24kg 84 reps in 5:00.  He did this with zero Deadlift or Pullup training and minimal kettlebell training.  And last he was coming to “WATCH” the competition and decided at the last minute to weigh-in and compete.  Brass Balls my friend.  That is what I’m talkin’ about.

2 Grateful that two of my super-dedicated class members Paul and Kathi came out and tested themselves.  They both did a fantastic job on minimal training and not ever doing this before.  I know they were both semi-frustrated with some of their lifts…but it’s a baseline to grow next time :)

3 Hopefully the other competitors caught the major lesson of the day.  I had a really crappy prior 2 months of Deadlift training so I wasn’t expecting big things.  Well I felt good on this particular morning so tapers WORK!  My second attempt 455 felt fantastic.  My PR is 495.  So I looked at Adam and said “should I play it safe and go for 475 cuz I know I’ll get it or should I go BIG at 500?”  Adam’s response “Go Big or Go Home”  You see me shut it down about 4 inches off the floor with 500.  Knowing that I left nothing on the table was gratifying as well.  Also Adam pulled 500 on his 2nd attempt and missed 530 on his 3rd “Going BIG” as well.  I definitely learned my lesson that morning… from a couple of us trying to best our own personal records and falling short…THIS time.

Props to the 7 of YOU who competed!

The next Tactical Strength Challenge will be held in September.  Be there and compete!

St. Paul Boot Camp Weight Loss Before & After – Joe Tebbe

Today’s Fat Loss Transformation spotlight is Joe Tebbe.  Joe started attending RAD Boot Camp at Kinetic Edge Fitness about 18 months ago.  After 3 months a family illness handcuffed him to the house.  He still kept up with the workouts.  I sent an email out about the PhD – PIE HOLE DIARY.  Joe took it serious, wrote EVERYTHING down that went in his Pie-hole and proceeded to lose 49+lbs in 6 MONTHS.  You read that right.  FORTY-NINE POUNDS in SIX MONTHS!

Joe is a pretty modest guy so I’ll do his boasting for him… THAT my friend is frickin’ AWESOME!

All I did was provide a slight kick in the ass.  JOE did the work.  One more thing that Joe is reluctant to tell a lot of people is that this life changing transformation has AMPED his rock climbing ability now working on 10b routes.  For those of you not in the climbing world 10b correlates to the difficulty of the pitch and size of hand/foot holds on given rock climbing route.

Here’s what Joe has to say about classes at RAD Boot Camp

Thank You for the PHD…”Pie Hole Diary”…

“I just wanted to thank you especially the “Pie Hole Diary”.  I started my PHD on July 8th 2008, I weighed in at 230 lbs. I do RAD Boot Camp Workouts 5 days per week.

Today I weighed in at 198 lbs and my goal is 195 by 10-31-08.  Before July 8th 2008, I was exercising just as hard so I know the PHD changed my life.  The plateau breaking changes I made were RAD Boot Camp, starting the PHD, trying not to exceed my calorie intake, increasing my protein and eliminating drinking alcoholic beverages.

I started my life change in 2004, when I stepped on the scale and weighed 285 lbs., 4 years later I’ve lost a total of 85 lbs.  I feel so great, empowered, tons of energy and just happy to know I’m healthy again and running circles around guys half my age.  I also went from a 38 inch waist to a 32 inch waist in jeans! I feel like I’m 55 going on 25…Thanks!”

KettlebellsBrad:  Take me back a few years…where you were physically, mentally, etc…  Everything previous to kettlebells / RAD Boot Camp

Joe: 2004 I stepped on the scale and weighed 285#, I thought man I’m 15# from 300. I was totally bummed out but and at that time I made my mind up to I had to change. I had turned into a couch potato Fox news junkie. I was totally out off shape. I went on a hike in the mountains with my son in Arizona it was hot as hell we picked up water and I was psyched….I got about 500 feet up the steep trail and my son turned me back because he thought I was going to have a heart attack.  My minds eye was playing tricks on me, I honestly thought I could easily do this hike, I still thought I was the in shape outdoorsman of years gone by. It hit me like a ton of bricks, what happened to me, I used to be athletic, ripped abs the whole 9 yards. Why was my mind protecting me from the fact that I was now a fatso. I didn’t even really realize that    I was depressed. Everyone said you don’t look that heavy or you carry your weight so well. I started looking in the mirror and started seeing the fat guy I had turned out to be and I didn’t like what I saw. I wanted to be able to be active with my children and not confined to the Lazy Boy in the living room dreaming of the mountains and portages in the boundary waters. I made my mind up to change I just didn’t know how yet.  I tried the Atkins diet, the Y and mindless tread mill running, Buying exercise equipment only to go into mothballs. I would lose weight and then regain it.  I wasn’t going anywhere fast.

St. Paul Kettlebell ClassesBrad:  How did you meet Brad and/or discover RAD Boot Camp / Kinetic Edge?

Joe: I started searching the internet for extreme strength. I just thought I had to do something extreme to meet my goals for weight loss and strength. During my search I came across Kettlebells and they really intrigued me. I set Dragon Door and kettlebells as one of my favorites. I kept surfing the net but I just kept coming back to Kettlebells. I knew that I had to find out hands on about Kettlebells so I Googled Kettlebells in St Paul. I came across Brads website for Kinetic Edge Performance, I called Brad because I knew I had to make a commitment.  I went to the Gauntlet not really knowing what I was getting into and I got my ass kicked, just what I needed to change my life.

KettlebellsBrad:  Describe your first experience with kettlebell training / RAD Boot Camp…

Joe: I made it through the Gauntlet, sweating trying to catch my breath and run through the ringer. It was the most intense work out since my high school track and soccer days only harder because I was so out of shape and the Kettlebells ramped my heart rate up faster than anything I’ve ever experienced. I knew Kettlebells was exactly what I was looking for and an experienced and relentless, strength coach, Brad. I knew I would be back and back and back and own Kettlebells and forge myself into the person in my minds eye, with the help of Brad and RAD Boot Camp

St. Paul Kettlebell ClassesBrad:  What period of your life was this?…

Joe: I was 52 years old, re-inventing my life after raising 5 wonderful children and losing my second wife after 20 years of marriage.

St. Paul KettlebellsBrad:  Where were you in clothes size, weight, etc?…

Joe: Joe: At my worst I was in size 42 pants at 285. When I started Rad Boot Camp I was in size 38 and weighed 265.

St. Paul KetttlebellsBrad:  What changes exactly have you seen?  (include clothes size, weight, inches, confidence, energy, etc…)

Joe: I now weigh 194 lbs, size 32 jeans, tons of energy and I’m always happy. My confidence is at an all time high. I’m now goal oriented and proudly raising my disabled son, Chris on my own. I am a great example for all my kids(that are now all adults), their crazy old man, that rock climbs, ice climbs works out like a maniac and enjoys every minute of it.

KettlebellBrad:  What makes Kettlebell Training / RAD Boot Camp / Kinetic Edge different from anything else you’ve tried?

Joe: The iron ball with a handle was so different and so intense on all my muscles and my core and cardio. The variety of movements and excercises challenged everything about my physical being, my proprieoception, balance, strength and fortitude nothing was left out. After the Gauntlet, Inferno or Survivor classes my metabolism was so ramped I felt the heat of my body for most of the day  after the work-out. I started to burn fat like never before.

KettlebellBrad:  What is your #1 “Secret” as to why you finally got the results you were looking for?

Joe: The number one best kept secret was Kettlebells and finding a real strength coach that knows hard work and beat downs reap the ultimate rewards.

KettlebellBrad:  What would you tell someone like yourself who is on the fence about starting RAD Boot Camp / Kinetic Edge classes?

Joe: I would tell them that if they are truly interested in having their true potential tapped and are not afraid of being tapped, then go for it, by all means.

Here’s what Dena has to say about classes at RAD Boot Camp

“Exactly what I was looking for…

“After giving birth to my daughter I had lost all muscle tone and definition I once had and gained 40 pounds. I was unhappy and knew I needed something above and beyond my regular workouts to get back into shape. I committed myself to Brad’s RAD Boot Camp and my life has changed forever!  Brad completely dedicates his time and energy to helping you achieve your personal goals and is extremely motivating (getting me to his classes at 5:30am!!). His expertise and knowledge is priceless and I feel very fortunate to work with a trainer with all the strengths and qualities that he possesses. He knows how to mix up a workout to keep you on your toes and pushing yourself to do your best. Thank you Brad for all you’ve done to help me reach my goals…I couldn’t have done it without you!! You are the BEST and I would recommend your services hands down to anyone that will listen!!”

Woodbury Kettlebell Classes

Dena in the Hot Seat

Woodbury Kettlebell ClassesBrad:  Take me back a few years…where you were physically, mentally, etc…  Everything previous to kettlebells (working out at LT / in the basement before you came to see me with kettlebells).

Dena: Before I started KB and before I had my daughter  I was in shape but had little definition, couldn’t afford a personal trainer and was bored to death of doing the same workout but knew nothing else.  I’m one to try many things – I tried a few types of Yoga, Pilates and Kick boxing to add some change to my work outs but nothing felt like the right fit and nothing gave me the difference I was looking for in my weight, strength or endurance.  I was frustrated and doing mindless workouts….what a waste of time now that I look back…
Woodbury KettlebellBrad:  How did you meet Brad / come into contact with RAD Boot Camp / Kinetic Edge?

Dena: I met Brad while I was a member at Life Time Fitness.  I was looking for an answer to my desire to loose weight and provide me with enough energy to work out at the end of my busy work day.   He introduced me to Advocare to help with my energy and aid in my quest to lose weight.   He also recommended that I start working out in the morning so that the end of my days weren’t filled with excuses.  I gave him so many excuses as to why I couldn’t and why that was too early for me, but once I started on that routine…I have never looked back.  it truly does make a huge difference in your daily energy levels and even today, if it doesn’t happen before I go to work…it will likely not happen.

Woodbury KettlebellBrad:  Describe your first experience with kettlebell training / RAD Boot Camp…

Dena:
I read an article that Brad wrote for the Woodbury Magazine that introduced Kettlebell’s and the results he had from starting this form of training.  I called Brad immediately after reading the piece he wrote and signed up that day for a personal training session. This type of training was unlike anything I had done in the past.   The day after my first class I could hardly move…I found muscles I hadn’t used in years and knew from that moment on…knew this was what my body needed to get the results I was looking for.

Woodbury Kettlebell ClassesBrad:  What period of your life was this?…  New mom, etc…

Dena:
I started Kettlebells about a year and a half after I had my daughter.  I was struggling to lose the weight I had gained from being pregnant.  Going back to my normal workout routine (cross traininger and weight training) was just not enough for me to see any significant movement on the scale and I was getting more and more frustrated not fitting into any of my pre-baby clothes.   My friends would say…”Dena, don’t worry about it…you just had a baby” which was really nice of them however, it had been over a year since I had “technically” had a baby:)

St. Paul Kettlebell ClassesBrad:  Stats from when you first started post pregnancy?

Dena: I don’t have measurements but this is what I know for weight/size:
When I got pregnant I weighed 130lbs and wore a size 6/8.
I topped the scales at 175lbs and was in size 10/12 after I got out of maternity clothes.
When I started doing KB I was about 145lbs.

Current weight = 125lbs (have lost 20 lbs since I started with KB)
Size
changes = 6/8 or size 30 to 2/4 or size 26/27  Huge difference…even
when I got down to 130lbs again…my body changed-had to buy all new
pants!
Body comp- I went from a 23% body fat to 19%

I started working out 1-2 days a week using Kettlebells and immediately notice results in my increased strength.  I started to add training days to my week and once I started going to Kettlebell 3+ times a week
I started to notice  significant changes in my body that I had never experienced before…it was truly remarkable. Not only was I losing weight but I was getting stronger.   Once my weight was back to
normal…I was amazed!

St. Paul Kettlebell ClassesBrad:  As a new mom and someone who had obviously worked out before, why did kettlebells / RAD Boot Camp appeal to you?

Dena: When I went back to working out…doing the same thing I had done pre-baby was not making any difference.  We bought equipment to use at the home and left LTF.  I enjoyed not going to the gym but found it equally as hard to get down stairs to use equipment at home.  I needed something more and kettlebells found me thanks to my friend Brad.  I love the workouts, the challenge, the strength and endurance it has given me but most of all I love the way it has changed the way I think about working out.  It’s fun and creative and unlike no other workout in the past…has inspired me to not only do KB but teach it to others.

PS… I also love that it has given me a whole new wardrobe above and beyond my pre-baby clothes!

Minneapolis Kettlebell ClassesBrad:  What is your #1 “Secret” as to why you finally got the results you were looking for?

Dena:
I made the decision to dedicate my body to science…Brad’s “Mad Science” that is:)
I started committing more time to kettlebells…moving from 1-2 days a week to 3-5 days a week.  It is a mind-set change when you feel you need to be on a cross trainer/tread mill/lifting weights in order to work out.  Understanding that KB combines cardio and strength training at the same time.  I also changed my thought process from “losing weight” to “gaining strength and endurance”…once I changed that goal…my workouts took on a different meaning which kept me going longer and made me push myself to work harder.

Minneapolis Kettlebell ClassesBrad:  What would you tell someone like yourself who is on the fence about starting RAD Boot Camp / Kinetic Edge classes?

Dena:
Just give it a week…don’t try it once…give it a week and you will start to see and feel things like never before.  Most of the time this happens in your first class but committing to a weeks investment “which is FREE” you get a feel of what you can do.  People go to places like Lifetime and work their tails off and are frustrated with their results…why keep doing the same thing and expecting a different result?  Try something new and see how your body responds.

I’ve also told people that stationary workout equipment when used daily is MINDLESS (speaking from experience)…how do you expect your body to respond to something that doesn’t trigger your brain to do anything.  With kettlebells you are working out with intent…you have to be paying attention to what you are doing…you are intentional with your movements…the form you are keeping…which in turn let’s your body and brain work together and respond to the work you are doing to help you achieve your goals.
